Angela McHenry: 2018 Graduation Ball Candidate of the Year Winner

Angela McHenry, Business Improvement Consultant at Belfast City Council and winner of the DMS Ireland Candidate of the Year 2018, gives an insight into her role and how she has been able to apply her CIPD Level 7 studies to her work and improvement projects and how winning this Award is a confidence boost and motivation for further professional development.

Brief Description of what the organisation does: 

Belfast City Council is the largest council in Northern Ireland, serving a population of almost 340,000 and has around 2,600 staff. We have 60 elected Councillors who, along with the Lord Mayor, are working to ensure that Belfast continues to grow and develop, attracting investment and boosting the health and prosperity of all our citizens. Our powers and services include land and community planning, bins and recycling, car parking, tourism, parks and leisure and city events. As part of our Belfast Agenda, over the next five years, we aim to create 15,000 new jobs, attract over £1 billion of investment, double the value of tourism, and achieve a Belfast Region City Deal.

Brief Description of your role within the organisation:

As an Improvement Consultant, I play a lead role in supporting and delivering continuous improvement, change and organisational development across the Council.

Why did you choose to embark on the CIPD Qualification with DMS Ireland?

A number of colleagues had completed the CIPD qualification through DMS and had given very positive feedback. I thought the work-based study approach provided by DMS would suit my personal circumstances well.

How did the CIPD Qualification help you in your role the workplace? How has your organisation benefited from you completing the CIPD Qualification?

Completing the CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma in HRM has increased my knowledge and skills in human resources and organisational development. It has provided me with professional insight, research and latest thinking on key topics, which I have been able to apply to my work and improvement projects in different areas.

How would you describe your experience working with DMS?

I can honestly say that the DMS team were very professional, flexible and encouraging. I was balancing studying with working full time, maternity leave and having a young family and the team were supportive throughout.

How did it feel to win a Special Award at the DMS Ireland Graduation Ball 2018:

I was surprised and delighted to have won Candidate of the Year. It was great recognition for the hard work I put in to completing the qualification. It has also given me a bit of a confidence boost and motivation for further professional development.
