Brief Description of what the organisation does:
“The Irish Prison Service is responsible for the safe and secure custody of people committed to prison, while supporting their rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society. It operates prisons and related services across Ireland and works closely with other criminal justice, health and community organisations.”
Brief Description of your role within the organisation:
“I work as a Higher Executive Officer within the HR Directorate. My role involves managing and supporting a range of HR services and digital transformation projects. I am currently the Project Manager for the implementation of a new national Time and Attendance system across the Irish Prison Service. This involves coordinating stakeholders, managing risks and project deliverables, supporting governance and ensuring that the new system meets the operational and organisational needs of the Service.”
Why did you choose to embark on the CIPD Qualification with DMS Ireland?
“I had gained significant practical HR experience throughout my career, but I wanted to strengthen this with a recognised professional qualification. I chose the CIPD qualification to deepen my understanding of strategic HR, employment law, organisational development and evidence based practice. I also wanted to challenge myself personally, increase my confidence and support my ambition to progress into a more senior management role.”
How did the CIPD Qualification help you in your role the workplace?
“The qualification helped me to look beyond the immediate operational issue and consider the wider strategic and organisational impact of decisions. It strengthened my skills in critical thinking, stakeholder engagement, change management and evidence-based decision-making.
I have applied this learning directly to my work, particularly while managing the implementation of a major Time and Attendance system and supporting other HR digital transformation initiatives. It has also given me greater confidence when presenting recommendations, challenging constructively and engaging with senior managers and technical stakeholders.”
How has your organisation benefited from you completing the CIPD Qualification?
“The organisation has benefited from my enhanced ability to connect HR practice with wider organisational priorities. I now bring a stronger strategic and evidence-based approach to projects, policy discussions and decision-making.
My learning has supported improvements in areas such as project governance, stakeholder engagement, workforce data, employee experience and digital transformation. It has also helped me identify risks, assess the impact of change and develop practical recommendations that reflect both organisational and employee needs.”
How would you describe your experience working with DMS?
“My experience with DMS was extremely positive. The tutors were knowledgeable, supportive and approachable, and they understood the challenges of balancing study with a demanding full-time role and family life.
The programme was practical and relevant, and I was able to apply much of the learning directly within my workplace. Although completing the qualification required commitment and perseverance, the support and encouragement provided by DMS helped me remain focused and achieve my goal.”
Please provide any further details below which are relevant: (eg future aspirations, goals, tips and information for other candidates/potential candidates)
“Completing the qualification has been an important milestone for me, both professionally and personally. It contributed significantly to my development and helped me perform strongly in a recent senior management selection process, where I secured a high position on the promotion panel.
My goal is to progress into a senior management role where I can continue to influence organisational strategy, lead meaningful change and improve the employee experience.
My advice to other candidates is to relate the assignments to real workplace challenges wherever possible. Balancing work, study and family life can be difficult, but take each assignment one step at a time and do not underestimate the value of your own professional experience. The sense of achievement at the end makes the hard work worthwhile.”
